Looking for a legit iOS bootcamp but don’t know where to start?
Or maybe you DO know where to start but have some reservations.
In today’s review, we’re going over one of the most effective, engaging and inexpensive iOS bootcamps on the market. You don’t have to worry about wasting time or investing a ton of money only to find out the content is outdated. Or maybe you simply end up discovering iOS development isn’t for you. Would you rather be out $15,000 or $15?
The course in question is the now-legendary iOS 13 & Swift 5 – The Complete iOS App Development Bootcamp by Angela Yu.
Lead instructor at a top London bootcamp, Angela brought her wit, wisdom, and occasional “geeky humour” to the Udemy world. She’s also producer of the excellent The Complete Web Development Bootcamp, boasting over 60,000 students. A former medical doctor, she spends a lot of time researching how students learn. And right away, you can tell she put her heart into that.
- The production values are those you might find in an expensive monthly learning platform (not naming names!).
- The vocal delivery is clear and professional.
- Angela herself is super engaging. Great stage presence!
- And the content? It’s probably the best on Udemy in terms of organization, projects, and material presented.
The course clocks in at nearly 73 hours.
While much of that includes legacy material, you’ll still be spending a lot of time on this one. Angela notes that this release is based on the bootcamp she teaches in-person in London. Promising you’ll build beautiful apps even if you have ZERO programming experience, iOS 13 & Swift 5 – The Complete iOS App Development Bootcamp is a true “zero to hero” course.
iOS 13 & Swift 5 – The Complete iOS App Development Bootcamp teaches you the programming language of iOS (Swift). But it also shows you how to build top-notch projects with some really cool tech. For example, apps range from using Apple’s ARKit2 to ML (machine learning) using CoreML2 + CreateML. These are concepts and projects you just don’t really see with any other iOS bootcamp on Udemy. With a few tweaks, they can definitely feature as portfolio projects.
But before you do anything crazy, your first task is to set up your dev environment. This includes downloading Xcode, which spoiler alert, can be a REAL pain in the butt. It’s a huge download for one thing. Fortunately Angela walks you through the entire process to reduce the frustration.
Then it’s into the fun stuff. This course is FILLED with projects and challenges.
Coding challenges include:
- Using Interface Builder in Xcode
- Swift data types, variables & arrays
- Control flow – build a story app like Lifeline
- Cocopods, REST, APIs – build a Bitcoin price tracker
Then it comes to the projects, including the above-mentioned bigger projects that incorporate CoreML, CreateML and ArKit.
There’s a significant chunk of time dedicated to UX/UI (user experience and user interface) along with important design principles like color theory and typography. This is so important with iOS apps since they’re renowned for their sleek, sexy designs.
But what I really like about this iOS bootcamp is how Angela focuses on real-world application of the apps you build.
So many times the Udemy instructor is hyper-focused on the theoretical. But what good is all that knowledge if you can’t apply it? But Angela’s course is different. For example, there’s a section on idea validation, app monetization methods, growth hacking, press coverage, “working the algorithm” on the app store, and much more. She even includes a section on black hat vs. white hat methods for getting more app downloads and revenue. That’s pretty dope.
For those of you hip to major releases of iOS, you know that iOS 13 recently dropped. This version will be available on iPhone 6s or later, to include iPhone SE.
The bottom line is, you are getting the most up-to-date iOS course available.
And ultimately, this is the best iOS bootcamp on Udemy. Yeah, it sounds hyperbolic and maybe it is, but seriously. There was a lot of work put into this course and it shows. Everything is just a cut above your normal Udemy fare.
Usually there is some heavy competition between instructors of major tech courses, especially bootcamp-style courses but Angela Yu’s iOS 13 & Swift 5 – The Complete iOS App Development Bootcamp is in a class by itself.
This thing is showered with five-star ratings and it’s clear that students have learned a LOT from this course. Not only that, it’s prepared them to become de facto iOS developers. You simply cannot beat the value of this course, which can usually be had for $15 or under.
