Best MySQL course! Ultimate MySQL Bootcamp: Go from SQL Beginner to Expert by Colt Steele

MySQL Bootcamp Colt Steele Best MySQL course

Welcome to the best MySQL course on Udemy right now.

It can be tough trying to figure out which course to enroll in — a quick search of “MySQL” returns nearly 3,000 results!

Fortunately, I’ve found a high-quality MySQL course that delivers on nearly every major metric.

The Ultimate MySQL Bootcamp: Go from SQL Beginner to Expert by Colt Steele is perhaps an unlikely course coming from Colt. You see, this guy is one of Udemy’s godfathers, bringing us the now-classic Web Developer Bootcamp that went on to sell over 450,000 courses.

The Web Developer Bootcamp is Colt Steele’s breakaway hit on Udemy.

He puts an emphasis on modern and popular tech tools like React and Bootstrap 4. Conversely, the first version of MySQL appeared in 1995. But despite the age of MySQL, it’s still used frequently in various settings. For example, WordPress uses MySQL and this CMS powers over 30% of all websites! MySQL is definitely a skill any web developer can find useful…But it’s definitely not limited to them.

Clocking in at 20 hours with 320 lectures, The Ultimate MySQL Bootcamp: Go from SQL Beginner to Expert is packed with material. The course is geared towards beginners but those familiar with SQL operations can also benefit from much of the course, including 138 articles. These articles are actually more like supplemental materials that include code samples and notes.

What’s covered in this MySQL course at a glance:

  • Learn the ins and outs of SQL syntax
  • Generate reports using sales and user data
  • Analyze data using Aggregate Functions
  • Run complex queries using MySQL logical operators and string functions
  • Write all the common SQL joins
  • Work with large datasets containing thousands of entries
  • Build a web app using MySQL and NodeJS
  • Design and implement complex database schemas
  • Learn to navigate the treacherous world of storing dates and times
  • Clone the database structure of a photo sharing social network
  • Write Javascript code to generate fake data sets

Like any good Udemy course, the first few sections are centered on introducing basic concepts and getting set up with your development environment.

He also goes over basics that may seem obvious to some instructors. However, these are super important questions newbies have! For example “What is a database?” and “SQL vs. MySQL” are both their own videos.

After getting set up with the installation, you get right into creating and dropping databases. He then covers inserting data, CRUD commands, string functions, aggregate functions, and more. Most of this material is stuff you’d find in any other MySQL course. The big difference is that Colt has a knack for explaining things in an engaging way. And let’s be honest, databases aren’t the spiciest topic on the planet.

One thing that really separates this MySQL course from the rest is the Instagram Database clone project.

Just having a chance to work on the schema is a big benefit, but you also get a lot of project challenges in section 15.

By section 17, you’re building a web app with Node.

Oh yeah, he also throws in a two-hour bonus on Node.js. You get to see how Node connects to MySQL and get plenty of practice. Great feature, and not something you see often in other MySQL courses.

In summary? This course is suitable for any web developer, marketing person, or even business owner.

Whether you need to generate reports using data or build a cool app like a social network, this course will help you do that. The Instagram Clone project is a great perk, and with a few tweaks could be a great portfolio project.
