Watch out Colt Steele and Angela Yu – Andrei Neagoie’s The Complete Web Developer in 2019: Zero to Mastery is coming for #1.
Andrei Neagoie knows how the system works.
A self-taught developer and former Silicon Valley senior dev, Andrei left the 9-to-5 rat race and decided to pursue teaching. His first Udemy course The Complete Web Developer in 2019: Zero to Mastery illustrates his intimate and first-hand knowledge of what self-taught developers both need and want in an online coding course.
The Complete Web Developer in 2019: Zero to Mastery clocks in at a healthy 33 hours. The thing is, it isn’t an original concept. Many coding bootcamp-style courses have been released prior to its debut. From Colt Steele’s The Web Developer Bootcamp to Angela Yu’s The Complete 2019 Web Developer Bootcamp – there are many! The concept is simple, yet oh-so-challenging. Teach students the frontend and backend of web technologies in less than 40 hours of video. Can it be done?
But right away, Neagoie’s version of this sticks out. . .No doubt influenced by his own challenges he faced while learning this stuff. For one thing, he has a thriving Discord community. Thus, students don’t feel like they’re watching videos in isolation. Whether they need help debugging a line of code or an accountability partner, the thriving community helps learners in need. Even more impressive, Andrei is highly active there. He issues everything from coding challenges to words of encouragement.
Secondly, the course is focused on the ultimate goal most students have: getting a job.
One section, titled simply “Career of a Web Developer” is nearly 40 minutes. In this video, Andrei describes what students may encounter at a developer job. He also addresses career-relevant topics like endorsements on LinkedIn and what to do if you don’t have enough experience. These topics, while critically relevant to most aspiring devs, just aren’t discussed in other bootcamps. As an added feature, he also discusses higher-level concepts like how the Internet works and how to keep your apps secure.
Thirdly, while the bootcamp style courses on Udemy are plentiful, they tend to present similar technologies like MongoDB.
Not so with Zero to Mastery.
The main project in Zero to Mastery is SmartBrain. This is a full-stack image recognization app that also introduces students to machine learning (ML).
With a few tweaks, SmartBrain could be a shining portfolio piece for any junior developer –– certainly not a coincidence coming from the career-minded brain of Andrei Neagoie.
One critique of this course is that the audio levels are inconsistent. This isn’t a deal breaker, but it can be distracting going from smooth audio with consistent levels to sounding brittle and low on decibels. This is a common issue heard in many Udemy courses, but because this course is so high-quality it stood out more than other courses’ audio production.
Overall, The Complete Web Developer in 2019: Zero to Mastery is a fresh new take on all-in-one coding bootcamps.
It’s currently the highest-rated bootcamp course and it comes as no surprise. From Discord, to the job-ready emphasis all the way to the unique yet important tools like PostgreSQL. . .The Complete Web Developer in 2019: Zero to Mastery is a potent learning tool. And going into 2020, I predict it will remain a top-quality course for aspiring developers.
